Iodine is used in a range of medical, agricultural, and industrial applications. It is the main component of injectable contrast media for clinical examinations, and it is used directly in the production of various pharmaceuticals. In the industrial field, iodine is used in a variety of applications, including disinfectants for the dairy industry, biocides for paints and wood treatments, herbicides, and more.
SQM produces iodine and, through a joint venture with Ajay Chemicals, produces organic and inorganic iodine derivatives. SQM is also actively present in the iodine recycling business - through Ajay or on its own - in Europe, the United States and Asia.

In order to supply its own potassium chloride (KCl) — the raw material for producing potassium nitrate — SQM began operations in the Salar de Atacama. The initial investment involved building a potassium chloride and potassium sulfate plant. Today, the Potassium business line includes sales of these two potassium fertilizers. The main sources of potassium available on the market for use in fertilizers are potassium chloride (KCl), potassium sulfate (K2SO4), and potassium nitrate (KNO3). Of these, potassium chloride is by far the most important worldwide. SQM is the only company that produces all three sources of potassium.

SQM has proven experience in the production and marketing of nitrates, potassium chloride, boric acid, and magnesium chloride. Potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate are the raw materials used in solar salts, which are essential to the operation of solar thermal power plants, while magnesium chloride hexahydrate — known as bischofite — is used for effective dust control and de-icing on roads.
